Assisi |
“Umbria’s most
famous town, it sits on the flanks of Monte Subasio, like a
pink ship sailing over the green sea of the valley below.” The
Basilica di San Francesco is Assisi’s main attraction
but there is more to see in the lively Piazza del Commune with
architecture from Roman times and cafes and restaurants for
today. |

Bevagna |
Charming for its friendly and
unspoiled way, Bevagna has not lost touch with its Roman past.
In fact, one of your dinners will be served in a restaurant
inside a Roman amphitheater! A walk around Bevagna will make
it easy to imagine medieval life bustling in the town’s
narrow, yet serene streets. |

Montefalco |
Montefalco is heralded as the
balcony of Umbria for its views to Perugia, Assisi, and down
the Valle Umbria to Spoleto. Past the modern suburbs lies one
of the finest hill towns in the area. The locals are friendly,
the main piazza is welcoming (Piazza Communale), and sagrantino
is one of the best red wines of Umbria. |

Spello |
Dressed in pink and cream Umbrian
stone, Spello’s central thoroughfare winds its way up
a hillside under another flank of Monte Subasio. Almost every
home seems to have a garden or pots full of flowers providing
beautiful pockets of color along the way.

Orvieto |
Sitting like a crown atop a sheer-cliffed
mesa, Orvieto is unmistakable. A funicular ride brings you inside
the walls, to walk to the candy-striped duomo, with it marvelous
mosaic façade, representative of the fabulous majolica
ceramics tradition of the area. |

Cortona
|
Just across the “border,” Cortona
lies gently “Under the Tuscan Sun,” and because of
its fame, is very tourist-friendly. Enjoy sweeping views of the
Valdechiana and Lake Trasememo, excellent shopping, and highly-recommended
restaurants in “Bella Tuscany”. |

Deruta |
The products made in Deruta, a
center for all things ceramic, are renowned worldwide. With over
200 shops, there is something for everyone, even a museum of
ceramics: Museo Regionale Celle Ceramica. |
